Hybrid publishing? It's a new wave of publishing, where writers invest in their work, publishers set high standards and provide traditional distribution, and writers work with publicists to ensure their books are discovered. It started in 2012, driven by the disillusion by authors with the way traditional publishers abandoned quality and content in favor of platform-driven celebrities. If you want to know more about it, check out this article in Publishers Weekly.
From Nov. 3 - 6, I attended a writers' retreat at The Boulders in Arizona, along with 45 other authors who have chosen (and been chosen) to publish through She Writes Press or its sister imprint, Spark Press. Leading the retreat were Brooke Warner, publisher and founder of She Writes Press, and Crystal Patriarche, CEO of SparkPoint Studio and founder of Spark Press. The keynote speaker, Rebecca Skloot, inspired us with her story of how she wrote and publicized her runaway bestseller, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. We also had many workshops on book marketing and publicity, industry insights, and the business of being an author.
My newest book, THE FORBIDDEN TEMPTATION OF BASEBALL, will be published through Spark Press in August 2017.
"Trailblazers, One and All" was our motto, and we are. We are partners and collaborators with our publishers, treated with respect. This is a new form of publishing, and we are on the cutting edge. Here are some photos of the event.
